Hicks committed to play college football at the University of Tennessee, where he joined the Volunteers football team in 2021. As a freshman, Hicks made an immediate impact, starting 12 games and recording 58 tackles, 2 tackles for loss, and 2 interceptions. His impressive performance earned him a spot on the 2021 Southeastern Conference (SEC) All-Freshman Team.
