The movie revolves around the character of Charlie (played by Shah Rukh Khan), a short-tempered and dejected man who has lost his passion for life after a tragic incident. He reunites with his old friends, who convince him to participate in a dance competition in Las Vegas. The team, consisting of four friends - Charlie, Gali (Varun Dhawan), Pooja (Deepika Padukone), and Naina (Katrina Kaif) - come together to form a dance crew, "Dhoom Taana".
