Mäkäräinen's breakthrough season came in 2009-2010 when she won her first World Cup overall title. However, it was in the 2012-2013 season that she truly established herself as a dominant force in the sport, winning her second World Cup overall title and taking home three gold medals at the 2013 World Championships in Nové Město na Moravě.
