However, as our understanding of animal sentience and cognition has grown, so too has our recognition of their inherent value and rights. The modern animal welfare movement began to take shape in the 19th century, with the establishment of organizations such as the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA) in the UK.
